For as long as I can remember I’ve supported Open Access: the idea that information must be accessible to all, especially virtual content, without a paywall. Many people claim to support Open Access yet rarely advocate for Net Neutrality or embrace fully what it can mean to hold the value of Open Access as a core feature of liberation. The language of liberation has become a huge buzzword that capitalism is benefiting from. Yet, for me, liberation is part of an anti-capitalist politic as Disability Justice reminds us. It divests from cultures of surveillance and encourages self-determination with an Afrofuturist philosophy at its core.
For this reason, and many more (like Routledge publishers deciding to maintain the contract of a known white supremacist, honoring Open Access ancestors like Aaron Swartz) I’ve decided to liberate the chapters and publications I have participated in which have a paywall. I’m also liberating a curriculum I wrote 10 years ago. These resources can be found at the FREE curriculum section and FREE readings section of our website.
I encourage you to read the Guerrilla Open Access Manifesto and join us!
