Engaged Pedagogy, Andragogy & Evaluation of Practice for Sexuality Professionals

This three-part series invites participants to reflect on, identify and engage their own teaching philosophy in a transformative way which centers the wholeness and humanity of the learning community. Building on this, participants will examine and question ways in which to apply their teaching philosophy in virtual learning spaces, while integrating a sustainable and mutually informing evaluation of practice.

Part I: Pedagogy, Andragogy & Teaching (2.5 hours)

CLASS DESCRIPTION

The goal of this class is to discuss pedagogy, andragogy, and approaches to offering sexuality education from an interdisciplinary approach. Participants will reflect on their own experiences as participant and educator and work on their teaching philosophy.

Learning Objective:

This course will invite a discussion of engaged pedagogy and andragogy for sexuality educational spaces with recognizing wholeness as the guiding principle..

Learning Outcomes:

• Discover and identify pedagogical / androgogical approaches to offering sexuality education
• Build a teaching philosophy
• Identify which frameworks guide our teaching

Essential Questions:

• What pedagogical / andragogical approaches may I consider offering in my sexuality education courses?
• What is my teaching philosophy? How do I construct my teaching philosophy?
• What frameworks guide my teaching?

Part II: Live Virtual Teaching (Synchronous teaching) (2.5 hours)

CLASS DESCRIPTION

The goal of this class is to discuss pedagogy / andragogy and approaches to offering sexuality education virtually. Participants will reflect on their own experiences as participant and educator, examine power in teaching and knowledge production, and troubleshoot the surveillance that is embedded in virtual teaching and learning that is both synchronous and asynchronous.

Learning Objective:

This class offers a discussion on the differences and approaches to virtual sexuality educational offerings with body autonomy and collective liberation as core principles.

Learning Outcomes:

• Identify and utilize pedagogical / andragogical approaches to virtual / online teaching and learning
• Examine surveillance approaches and how to remove them from virtual spaces

Essential Questions:

• How is virtual pedagogy / andragogy different from my in-person offerings?
• What forms of surveillance am I expected to uphold in the virtual classroom?
• How do I create experiences divested from surveillance?

Part III: Sustainable Evaluation & Feedback of Practice (2.5 hours)

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Learning Objective:

Participants will examine the types of evaluation processes that can take place before, during and after an offering. Building on that, participants will develop a strategy to evaluate their practice which is transformative using accountability, trauma responsive practices, self-compassion, and a radical approach to care.

Learning Outcomes:

• Identify the importance of evaluation for continued updated offerings
• Utilize evaluation as a core component of education and pedagogy
• Prepare for receiving and offering feedback
• List possibilities and challenges of evaluation

Essential Questions:

• Why is evaluation important?
• What do we learn when we do an evaluation?
• How do we prepare to receive and offer feedback?
• How does evaluation become a challenge / unusable?
• What is the difference between evaluation and feedback?

All three (3) sessions combined meet the following AASECT core knowledge and training areas:

• A: Ethics and Ethical Behavior
• B: Developmental sexuality from a bio-psycho-social perspective across the life course.
• N: Learning theory and application
• O: Professional communication and personal reflection skills
• P: History of the discipline of sex research, theory, education, counseling and therapy
• Q: Principles of sexuality research and research methods.

AASECT Sexuality Educator Training

• A. Theory and methods of general education (including curriculum development, delivery and evaluation).
• B. Theory and methods of sexuality education (including curriculum development, delivery and evaluation).
• C. Ethical issues in sexuality education.
• D. Theory and methods of approaches to sexuality education with specific populations (e.g., youth, older adults, couples, ethnic/ cultural/ faith-based populations, LGBTQ people, people with disabilities).**
• E. Theory and methods of different approaches to sexuality education delivery (e.g., small group work, one-on-one education, large group lectures or interaction, online delivery or use of other electronic means)

AASECT Sexuality Therapist Training

• A. Theory and methods of sex-related psychotherapy, including several different models.
• C. Theory and methods of approach to intervention in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems.
• E. Principles of consultation, collaboration, and referral.
• F. Ethical decision-making and best practice.

AASECT Sexuality Counselor Training

• A. Theory and methods of personal / individual counseling
• C. theory and methods of different approaches to intervention in relationship systems.
• E. Ethical issues in sexuality counseling
• F. Theory and practice of consultation, collaboration, and referral

This program meets the requirements of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and is approved for 8 CE credits. These CE credits may be applied toward AASECT certification and renewal of certification. There will be several breaks throughout the session about every hour / 90 minutes..

Bios of the Presenters

Bianca I Laureano, PhD, MA, CSE, CSES

Bianca I Laureano is an award-winning educator, curriculum writer, and sexologist. She is a co-foundress of the Women of Color Sexual Health Network and ANTE UP! a virtual freedom school. She has written curricula and led the curriculum development for the award-winning Netflix film Crip Camp and PBS documentary I Didn’t See You There, both guided by disability justice principles. She is an AASECT certified sexuality educator and supervisor and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the California Institute for Integral Studies for her work in expanding the US sexuality field. Nadia Maynard, LMSW-SHRM-SCP

Nadia has worked in academic, governmental, and non-profit settings to support trauma-informed and healing-centered mental health services with communities of color. Throughout her career, she has primarily worked in the areas of education, program evaluation, program implementation, racial justice, and disability justice, as well as organizational wellness. Throughout these areas of practice, Nadia has been alongside youth and young adults, survivors of sexual assault and/or domestic violence and human trafficking, as well as (im)migrants, asylum seekers, refugees, and mental health service providers.  Her experience as an educator, social worker, and organizational development consultant enables her to collaborate well. To that end, Nadia is excited about creating collaborations and learning content in partnership with other sexuality and mental health educators. Nadia’s engagement style is informed by transformative justice, disability justice, and racial justice principles grounded in community, interdependence, collaboration, mutuality, and kindness. Nadia lives in Houston with her partner, Steve, their two kids, and their dogs, Bowie and Billie.
